Q. What benefits are Veterans entitled to?
A. For Veterans and their dependents residing in Massachusetts there are two broad categories of benefits. One is benefits provided by the City and State. These are primarily based on need. Income and assets are factors in determining eligibility. The second category is comprised of Federal benefits, through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which are the same throughout the nation. There is a wide array of benefits and programs which the VA offers. Some are based on need others are available to any honorably discharged Veteran.
Q. Who is a Veteran?
A. Again the definition of Veteran differs between the federal government and the state of Massachusetts. Both require that the veteran possess a discharge document that is other than dishonorable. There are only two discharge documents which are other than dishonorable. One is an Honorable Discharge and the other is a General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions.
