The Taunton Council on Aging/Senior Center offers many health services for Taunton elders, sixty (60) years of age and older. The health programs described below are subject to funding.
Beginner's Fitness Program: The Beginner's Fitness Program is held on Mondays and Fridays, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. The objective of the program is to enhance the participants' knowledge in the areas of safe exercising and dieting, cardio-vascular fitness and stress management. Benefits to be expected from the Beginner's Fitness Program are: improved circulation, maintenance of bone density, flexibility, muscle tone and the therapeutic release of tension. The Beginner's Fitness Program is for elders who are either just starting a fitness program or have not attended a fitness program at the Senior Drop-In Center. A one dollar ($1.00) donation per class is requested. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs Formula Grant funds the Beginner's
Fitness Program.
Advanced Fitness Program: The Advanced Fitness Program is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. The objective of the program is to enhance the participants' knowledge in the areas of safe exercising and dieting, cardio-vascular fitness and stress management. Benefits to be expected from the Advanced Fitness Program are: improved circulation, maintenance of bone density, flexibility, muscle tone and the therapeutic release of tension. The Advanced Fitness Program is for elders who have successfully taken the Beginner's Fitness Program. Attendance of the program is also based on the number of available slots. A one dollar ($1.00) donation per class is requested. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs Formula Grant funds the
Advanced Fitness Program.
Yoga Program: The Yoga Program is held on Mondays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. The Yoga Program instructs elders as to proper movements and breathing techniques of yoga. All Yoga movements are conducted in a sitting or standing position. This program is instrumental in decreasing tension and stress. A one dollar ($1.00) donation per class is requested. An Executive Office of Elder Affairs Formula Grant and a generous donation from the Taunton Jaycees fund the Yoga Program.
Aerobic Dancing: Aerobic Dancing classes are held on Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. The Aerobic Dancing class offers physical fitness benefits while enjoying the delight of dancing. A one dollar ($1.00) donation per class is requested. The Aerobic Dancing class is funded by the City of Taunton.
Blood Pressure Screening: The Taunton Council on Aging/Senior Center offers weekly blood pressure screenings. The blood pressure screenings are held on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), from a generous donation by American Response Ambulance, conducts the blood pressure screenings.
Vision Support Group: The Taunton Council on Aging/Senior Center offers a monthly Vision Support Group for individuals who have diagnosed vision loss. The Support Group is held on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers from the vision loss community conduct the Vision Support Group.
Hearing Screening: The Taunton Council on Aging/Senior Center offers monthly Hearing Screenings at the Senior Drop-In Center, 30 Olney Street, Taunton, MA. The screenings are typically scheduled on the third Tuesday of the month beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Influenza Vaccines: In collaboration with the Taunton Board of Health, the Taunton Council on Aging/Senior Center provides annual influenza vaccines. The vaccines are scheduled in the Fall months. The Board or Health and volunteer nurses from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth distribute the vaccines.
